After reviewing the textbook, the discussion posts, and others, critical thinking is the human ability to reason and only make a decided move on problems and important matters after careful analysis of the situation and deep reflection of all the possible options available, while maintaining the willingness and receptiveness to consider new ideas even if they do not correlate with our current beliefs and knowledge. This approach helps us to make the best judgment, foster great decision-making skills, and helps to build a strong and healthy mind.
The three methods human beings have historically employed for reasoning (Comparative, Ideological, and Empirical Reasoning) are covered in these chapters. The process of establishing logic, making decisions, and even explaining one’s decision are all tied to these reasoning methods. These differing methods form the thinking tussle that we as humans go through in our minds. In so doing, they provide evidence to support the need for critical thinking skills as a necessary tool in our everyday life.
This level of importance of critical thinking to our mind’s well being that is highlighted by these chapters, as well as the explanations provided to support each method, makes them the heart of the matter. The disparities between each reasoning method as highlighted in these chapters according to the authors must be ingested as a necessary step in the path to building good critical thinking skills.
The chapters 12, 13, and 14 emphasize the concept of inference and explanation.
Inference is a step of reasoning where information, facts, and evidence are gathered, and a conclusion is reached based on the available considerations. In this step of the process, data is being sought out and put together which will be instrumental in making a reasonable and well thought out decision ((Facione & Gittens, 2016, p.34).
Explanation is the act of clearly stating and justifying one’s reasoning and providing facts, evidence, and other considerations from which one’s inference was drawn ((Facione & Gittens, 2016, p.34).
These concepts make up the building blocks for building good critical thinking skills. The ability to reach a conclusion based on facts and other considerations as well as explain one’s reason are products of the three methods of reasoning (Comparative, Ideological and Empirical reasoning). As a result, to fully understand each layer of reasoning methods as they are explained in the book, it is important to fully understand these concepts and their major importance to critical thinking skills.
The greatest challenge I am facing this session is time management and taking two classes which are making it more difficult to meet up with other things. The challenge I have with my critical thinking class is how to utilize the information. Everything is broad and needs time to concentrate. I am already doing so much in this class that I do not study much for my other class since everything is due at the same time. This is the time one must critically think about what is best. I have made my judgments based on what I have learned. By so doing, I have decided to prioritize my homework, work ahead, submit assignments before due dates so I can have extra time to study, work, and do other things. It is going to take some time to balance everything. I am happy I got to know what critical thinking means. In nursing school, we do a lot of critically thinking skills to make the right judgment, and beginning this class is already helping me on how to make good judgment and how to handle other issues. I have also come to realize that it is not all about following someone’s decision but making judgments based on that thought to come up with the right decision. I will continue to use these critical thinking skills to manage my time by making the right decisions on what, to begin with.
