Campus Plan for Learning and Community Involvement

You have been employed as the principal of University Middle School in University ISD, replacing a recently retired principal. Campus test scores have declined for the past two years at University Middle School (UMS). The superintendent has received several verbal complaints from individuals (one teacher, one parent, and one community member) who are concerned about the culture of the school and the lack of communication from the prior principal.
The Superintendent of University ISD has charged you with facilitating the development of a plan for learning and community involvement for the campus. The superintendent has shared that you have her support and the support of the school board of University ISD to make needed changes that are expected to affect morale and achievement positively. The superintendent expects you to involve stakeholders and build a new vision and student learning expectations as you strive to help the campus turnaround its recent decline.
The superintendent and those who have complained to her believe that the lack of a strong positive culture is the root of the reason of the decline. The superintendent and school board members agree that UMS is in need of a reshaping of the school culture through facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision for learning that is shared by all campus stakeholders. The first step, according to the superintendent and board members, is to determine the opinions of the stakeholders.
In alignment to the superintendent’s expectations, you will create the following for this assignment:
1. Prepare a press release in the form of a two-page newsletter to the parents and community at large.
2. Prepare a presentation for a board meeting, which will address board members, faculty and staff, district administrators, parents, students, and other community members.
3. Prepare a five-page report for the superintendent and school board that outlines the process of 1) developing the plan; 2) designing the plan; and, 3) implemented the plan.

Task descriptions:

For this assignment, you will complete all three parts. Use  graduate-level writing (one-inch margins, Times New Roman font, 12-point type).
A. Prepare a two-page planning document for the plan for learning and community involvement in the form of a press release to the local newspaper that includes:
1) details about the composition of the team that will create the plan
2) a description of how your team will determine the opinions of stakeholders, and
3) forthcoming plans for ensuring that parents and other members of the community are an integral part of the campus culture.
B. After the development of the planning document, prepare a 20-slide, substantive presentation for a group for board members, faculty and staff, district administrators, parents, students, and other community members that includes:
1) an analysis of the opinions of stakeholders and how the data were collected
2) a synthesis of how your team used consensus-building, conflict- management, communication, and information-gathering strategies to involve various stakeholders in planning processes that enable the collaborative development of a shared campus vision and mission focused on teaching and learning; and
3) an analysis of how your team developed and implemented strategies for systematically communicating internally and externally.
C. Prepare a five-page report to the superintendent and school board that includes
1) a description of the completed plan for learning and community involvement;
2) justification for the steps your team used to implement effective strategies to systematically gather input from all campus stakeholders, supporting innovative thinking and an inclusive culture;
3) support for how school staff have and will continue to establish and communicate consistent expectations for all stakeholders, providing supportive feedback to promote a positive campus environment; and
4) an appraisal of the process used to create the plan.

In all three documents, you will exhibit your understanding of how to effectively communicate a message in different ways to meet the needs of various audiences.

The report to the superintendent and school board will include a rich description of the completed plan for learning and community involvement (specific steps noted); a substantive justification for the steps the team used to implement effective strategies to systematically gather input from all campus stakeholders (analysis of the processes used); support for how school staff have and will continue to establish and communicate consistent expectations for all stakeholders, providing supportive feedback to promote a positive campus environment (including next steps); and a detailed appraisal of the process used to create the plan (opportunities, challenges, and what would be done if the processes were repeated).
The press release, forum presentation, and report will exhibit substantive understanding of how to effectively communicate a message in different ways to meet the needs of various audiences.
