narrative speech
The Narrative Speech is a speech that primarily entertains, but storytelling is the gateway to becoming a persuasive speaker. This entertaining/persuasive presentation is to be from 3 to 7 minutes in time. No formal written outline is required for this presentation. To complete this assignment the prepared student will locate a story of her own or his own choosing in advance of the due date for the presentation. The Story could be a real-life experience, a popular children’s tale, or fiction. The general purpose of the story is to entertain, but the successful student will use the opportunity to teach a life-lesson, a shared value, or re-inforce wisdom through the use of her|his story.

Morris: “Why black girls are targeted for punishment at school – and how to change that” (Links to an external site.) and see how Dr. Williams uses a narrative to capture her audience and ultimately persuade them to rethink education. This is both an excellent example of a narrative and a persuasive speech for you to reference.
