Articles analysis
Content analysis of how micro practice theory is used in empirical social work journals.
The purpose of this assignment is for students to become familiar with how micro practice theory is used in intervention research in major social work research journals. Students will prepare a 4 page review of the use of theory in a major social work journal.
Goals of this assignment include:
The assignment consists of the following elements: using a table and narrative format (described further below), complete the following review:
i. Count (and cite) the number of micro practice process or outcome studies. Calculate the percentage of studies over the review period that included micro interventions (during 2 years).
ii. In a table, identify the samples (Ns, mean age, gender, race/ethnicity), research designs used, and primary outcome measure(s).
iii. Count the number of intervention articles that identify an explicit underlying theory base (perspective, practice theory/model/strategy). List the reported theories in table, including the number of articles that reference each theory. Note how many and what percentage of articles make no mention of explicit theory (or vice-versa).
iv. Using the frameworks for analyzing theories summarized by Payne (2014, pp. 20-25), how would these be classified?
The paper should be no more than 4 pages (including the table and reference list). Include the following headings: introduction (purpose of paper), methods (procedure for collecting the data), findings (report by summarizing the table), discussion (your interpretation of the results [include here comments about any exemplary theory-based intervention articles], limitations (of your review), and conclusions).
