According to the Joint Commission International Accreditation [JCIA], opioid analgesics are ranked among drugs most frequently associated with adverse drug events like respiratory depression and deaths. These are related to 47% wrong dose medication errors, 29% improper monitoring, and 11% other factors like; excessive dosing, medication interactions and adverse drug reactions (JCIA, 2012). A thin line exists between appropriate pain management and administration of unsafe medication doses. Nurses have been accused of not effectively managing pain while in actual sense; nurses have used best judgment not to administer unsafe opioid doses. In some cases, this has led to family members verbally and physically attacking nurses for apparently “neglecting their patient’s pain”. The saddest part is providers too at times are on nurse’s case while they clearly know the consequences of some unsafe doses.
