Identify and discuss the basic components of an old definition of mentally retardedfrom your readings, PL94-142, or a scholarly source. Next, identify and discuss the basic components of a contemporary definition of intellectual disabilities. Use findings from both definitions to compare and contrast how the diagnostic labels have changed, as well as how the definition has evolved, during the past four decades since the implementation of PL-94-142 (1974), the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (1991), and through the 2000s.

Part II:

As a current or future leader in special education, you will be tasked with communicating with educators, parents, and local community members. Considering this audience, briefly describe why the terms have transformed over the years. Include at least two justifications for the latest shift in terminology to Intellectual Disability.

Part III:

Given your local living setting or other community of interest, discuss possible factors influencing or contributing to the cause of intellectual disabilities among students. Note how factors prevalent in your location may be particularly impactful. Include a brief description of your community (e.g., demographics), type (urban, suburban, or rural), ethnicity, and poverty rates.
